Lawmakers Pushes Bill to Jail Politicians With Dual Party Membership

The House of Representatives of Nigeria has amended the Electoral Act of Nigeria to criminalise dual membership of political parties in the country.

Under the proposed amendment, any individual found guilty of belonging to more than one political party at the same time will face a fine of N10 million, a maximum prison sentence of two years, or both.

The lower legislative chamber passed the amendment during Wednesday’s plenary session as part of efforts to strengthen discipline within Nigeria’s political parties and promote transparency in the country’s political system.

Lawmakers said the new provision is intended to curb the growing practice of politicians maintaining membership in multiple parties, which they argue undermines internal party structure and accountability.
