Man Electrocuted While Attempting to Steal Transformer Cables in Abuja

A young man suspected of attempting to steal cables from a transformer has been found dead near the electrical facility along Trademore Road in Lugbe, Abuja.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Friday, with the man reportedly found crouched and lifeless close to the transformer.

Residents said the body appeared stiff, raising suspicions that he may have been electrocuted when power was restored to the area. According to residents, there had been no electricity supply in the neighbourhood on Thursday night.

The incident attracted a crowd as residents gathered around the scene and expressed concern over the increasing activities of cable vandals in parts of the Federal Capital Territory.

Rasheed Ogunyemi, a resident of Iddo Seriki along the Airport Road, said residents in his community had repeatedly contributed money to repair their transformer, only for vandals to return and remove its cables.

He said the situation had continued to frustrate residents who rely on electricity for their daily activities.

The FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, confirmed the incident.

Adeh said the body had been evacuated from the scene and deposited at a mortuary in Gwagwalada for an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

Authorities are expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident as investigations continue.
