Parents Charged With Murder After their 7-yr-Old Son Weighing 255 Pounds dies of morbid obesity

A couple from Flint Township, Michigan, has been charged with second-degree murder, torture and child abuse following the death of their seven-year-old son, in a case prosecutors have described as one of prolonged and unimaginable neglect.

Damien and Jessica O’Brien appeared before authorities after their son, Casper, was rushed to hospital on 4 November 2025 when emergency services responded to a 911 call reporting a child in medical distress. Despite efforts by doctors to save him, the young boy was pronounced dead.

Medical examiners determined that Casper died from dilated cardiomyopathy, a condition that weakens the heart muscle, with morbid obesity identified as a significant contributing factor.

According to investigators, Casper weighed 255 pounds and stood 4 feet 2 inches tall at the time of his death. Health experts say a child of his age and height would normally weigh between 50 and 73 pounds.

Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton described the case as one involving “cruel and extreme suffering”, alleging that years of neglect left the child vulnerable and ultimately cost him his life.

Investigators also uncovered disturbing details about the family’s circumstances, revealing that Casper had never been enrolled in school. Authorities further disclosed that neither he nor his five-year-old sister appeared to have been known to government agencies, effectively living outside official records.

The allegations have sparked renewed concern over child welfare and the systems designed to identify and protect vulnerable children before tragedy strikes.

Damien and Jessica O’Brien are due to appear in court on 2 July, where they will face charges of second-degree murder, child abuse and torture. They are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
