Tayo Conga: Echoing Africa’s soul through the drum

Oluwatayo Oluwadamilare Ajayi, widely celebrated as Tayo Conga, has become a beacon of African culture, using the power of percussion to tell stories, preserve heritage, and inspire unity. Hailing from Ikogosi in Ekiti State, Nigeria, his journey spans over a decade of performances, workshops, and cultural advocacy that have taken him from local stages to international arenas.

For Tayo, the drum is not just an instrument but a philosophy. He often describes rhythm as the very fabric of life. “The rising and setting of the sun, the moon, the stars, the flow of time and seasons—all of these are rhythm,” he explains. “The drum reflects this rhythm and gives it voice.” This deep belief has shaped his craft, turning percussion into both a spiritual and cultural tool.

His career has seen him perform at some of Africa’s most celebrated gatherings, including the African Drum Festival, the International Jazz Festival, and the Forbes Under 30 Summit Africa. His music has reached audiences that include diplomats from the United States, Brazil, the Netherlands, and Spain. Yet, beyond entertainment, Tayo has consistently positioned percussion as education—leading workshops that reveal the depth and significance of African rhythms to diverse audiences worldwide.

As the lead percussionist of Tumbadora African Entertainment, Tayo has pioneered initiatives like the African Heritage Tour series, which has showcased Nigeria’s cultural landmarks such as the Ikogosi Warm Spring and the Badagry Slave Trade Zone. By blending tourism, history, and music, he creates powerful experiences that highlight Africa’s legacy while engaging modern audiences.

In 2025, Tayo’s international recognition reached new heights when he and the Tumbadora African Crew were officially invited to perform at the Creative Africa Nexus (CANEX) during the Intra-African Trade Fair in Algiers, Algeria. This milestone cemented his status as a global cultural ambassador.

At home, Tayo is the convener of the Spirit of Drums concert and the Gathering of Arts and Sound showcase, two platforms designed to celebrate creativity and African heritage. He also runs the Tayo Conga Drum Workshop and hosts quarterly shows at the Nike Art Gallery, Lagos, bringing together musicians, artists, and culture enthusiasts.

Today, he serves as Chief Percussionist at Elevation Church in Lagos, where his rhythms enrich worship and inspire congregations. His advice to aspiring percussionists reflects his philosophy: believe in God, remain grounded in your roots, practice with consistency, and let your art not only entertain but also preserve culture and inspire generations.
